How to check vehicle details in India

Here is the honest picture: what you can find from a number plate, what the official government services show, and what stays private no matter where you look.

What you can find

  • RTO office, city and state from the plate (here on this site)
  • Make and model (official mParivahan or VAHAN)
  • Registration date and fuel type
  • Insurance validity status

What stays private

  • × Owner name
  • × Owner address
  • × Owner phone number
  • × Chassis and engine number

Owner personal data is protected. We do not provide it, and neither do the public government lookups.

The official ways to check

1

mParivahan app

The government of India mParivahan app lets you search a registration number for basic RC details: make, model, registration and fitness dates, and insurance status. Install it from your phone's app store, open the RC search, enter the registration number and read the summary.

2

VAHAN portal

The official VAHAN portal at vahan.parivahan.gov.in is the government registration database. Use the Know Your Vehicle Details section, sign in with a mobile number and OTP, and enter the registration number to see official records.

3

SMS

No app needed. Send an SMS in the format VAHAN <regno> to 7738299899. You get basic vehicle details in reply. Standard SMS charges apply.

Our promise on privacy

VehicleDetails is an independent directory. We decode what a number plate reveals: the RTO office, city and state of registration, which is public reference data. We do not show, fetch or store any owner personal details, and we never will. If you need official registration records, always use the government Parivahan services above.

Start by decoding a plate, learn the number plate format, or read our methodology.
